Chamber Music America and Early Music America Announce Joint Showcase Performance

(SEATTLE, WA)-Early Music America, the national service organization for the field of early music, and Chamber Music America, the national service organization for the chamber music profession, are pleased to announce that six of their member ensembles have been selected to participate in the 2008 Ensemble Showcase concert at the Western Arts Alliance conference on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 8pm, at Downstairs at Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave., Seattle, WA. Admission to the concert is free.

The following ensembles will perform:

The Borealis String Quartet has performed to critical acclaim across Canada. The quartet’s National Arts Centre debut in Ottawa was featured by CBC Radio on In Performance, and the group achieved further national attention as finalists in the nationally televised CBC Great Canadian Music Dream Competition. The quartet’s CD, Classic Borealis (Skylark Records) was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award in 2004. The quartet will perform Beethoven’s String Quartet, opus 95; Mendelssohn’s String Quartet opus 80, and “Deep River,” a traditional melody arranged by Alfred Pochon.

Praised by the Denver Post for its “electric” playing, the Euclid Quartet has appeared at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to school classrooms, and has made radio and TV broadcasts across the U.S. In addition to taking top prizes at the Carmel and Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competitions, the Euclid recently took Third Place at the Osaka (Japan) International Chamber Music Competition and won Grand Prize at the Hugo Kauder International Competition for String Quartets, at Yale University. Featured on Euclid’s program will be Mendelssohn’s String Quartet opus 44, no. 1; Bartok’s String Quartet no. 4; and Beethoven’s Opus 18, no. 4.

Its performance hailed as “a triumph of ensemble playing” (New York Times), the Fry Street Quartet has perfected a “blend of technical precision and scorching spontaneity” (Strad). Since securing the Millennium Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2000, the ensemble has reached audiences from Carnegie Hall (via rural North Carolina) to Sarajevo and Jerusalem, exploring the medium of the string quartet and its life-affirming potential with “profound understanding, …depth of expression, and stunning technical astuteness” (Deseret Morning News). Fry Street’s program will include selected movements from Beethoven’s String Quartets, opus 18 no. 4; opus 59 no. 3; and opus 130.

Founded in 2001, the La Catrina Quartet has a triple mission: to work closely with living composers to promote the performance of new music, to promote Mexican and Latin American art music, and to perform the masterworks of the string quartet repertoire. La Catrina’s members have played as soloists with a variety of orchestras in Mexico and the United States and given recitals in Japan, England, the United States, and Mexico. Currently they are the Quartet-in-Residence of the Western Piedmont Symphony and the Chamber Music Festival of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. La Catrina will perform Javier Alvarez’s “Metro Chabacano”; Piazzolla’s “Four for Tango”; and the first quartet of Erwin Schulhoff.

Described by the press as "some of the finest Baroque musicians in America" (American Record Guide) and "among the best in the world" (Alte Musik Aktuell), Musica Pacifica has been performing, touring and recording since 1990. Artistic directors for the group are Judith Linsenberg, recorder, and Elizabeth Blumenstock, violin. Other members of the ensemble are David Morris, cello/viola da gamba, and Charles Sherman, harpsichord. Musica Pacifica will offer a short Baroque sampler program, consisting of Bach’s Sonata in F major, BWV 529, “Allegro”; Nicola Matteis’s “Ground after the Scotch Humour;” a medley of traditional Scots tunes; and Salamone Rossi’s Sonata sopra L’Aria di Ruggiero. Musica Pacifica will be joined by percussionist, John Loose, for this performance.

The Tudor Choir, a vocal ensemble of 12 singers directed by Doug Fullington, has been performing and recording since 1993. For many years the choir presented an annual concert series in Seattle, but they have recently become a touring ensemble, offering performances throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Tudor Choir will present a short Renaissance sampler: Palestrina’s motet “Tu es Petrus;” Byrd’s “Ave Verum Corpus;” and Palestrina’s “Nunc Dimittis” for double choir.
