Annual Awards

The Thomas Binkley Award

This award is named for the legendary lutenist and educator Thomas Binkley, who taught at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, made ground-breaking recordings with the Studio der Frühen Musik, and served as founding director of the Early Music Institute at Indiana University. It recognizes outstanding achievement in both performance and scholarship by the director of a university or college collegium musicum. The recipient also receives a free copy of Sibelius, an excellent notation program for early music. (Yearly recommendation deadline: January 15).

The Howard Mayer Brown Award

This award is named in memory of the renowned and beloved musicologist from the University of Chicago, Howard Mayer Brown, and recognizes lifetime achievement in the field of early music.

Early Music Outreach Award

2007 Recipient: Sarasa Ensemble, (Boston, MA)

The Early Music Outreach Award recognizes and promotes excellence in outreach and/or educational projects for children or adults by ensembles and individual artists. The award is given at Early Music America’s annual meeting in June in the years in which the award is made. The winner receives a $1000 cash prize to support its endeavors.

Both self-nominations and nominations by others are welcome. A letter of intent stating the nominee’s qualifications must be received in the EMA office by January 1 of each year. A program description and supporting materials must be received by April 1. These materials can include CDs, videotapes/DVDs, concert programs and/or handouts, curriculum materials, photographs, letters of recommendation, or reports by first hand observers. Documentation of the impact of the program is necessary for consideration for the award.

Judging of nominees is done by members of EMA’s Board of Directors and Education Committee.
