David Hawthorne, bowmaker

This workshop will introduce the tools and methods of bowmaking. Award winning bowmaker David Hawthorne will demonstrate the making of a complete baroque bow, and students will have  benches to try out the techniques they have seen and heard discussed, with supervision and help. Because of the short time frame of this workshop, I have chosen a style of bow to make that a student with some tool skills can complete, or make significant progress on in one week. I will make a short baroque bow with a clip-in frog, to cover many aspects of bowmaking in general, including planing, carving and cambering of the stick, adjustment, and finishing. For a novice bowmaker, this is a good place to start: for the more experienced bowmaker or violiinmaker, this will be a chance to work with bowmaker from the top of the field. Students of all levels are welcome; however, if the student wishes to complete a bow, he or she should have basic hand skills. Players are encouraged to come and make their own bow!
