Baroque composers knew how to draw the listener in with appealing musical themes and the use of counterpoint. Compositions with texts often contain word painting with instruments imitating both vocal line and textual ideas. Improvisation and ornamentation were part of the performance style. Hear these achievements in Vivaldi's "All'ombra di sospetto", Telemann's gamba sonata in A minor and Bach's Trio BWV 1027/1039 arranged for traverse and viol.
