A series of five master classes on Monday evenings for recorder and harpsichord players; sessions will focus on the contrasts between the energy and fire of Italian music and French refinement and elegance.  Participants will study the compositional characteristics of the music and the contrasting styles of performance including French specified ornamentation and Italian freely extemporized ornamentation.  Recorder players and harpsichordists will have opportunities to play sonatas and suites together in addition to studying solo literature.  Featured composers will include:  Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Marcello and Couperin.  One class session will include a faculty concert with members of the Columbia Baroque Soloists.  The last meeting will be a recital by the class participants.  Sessions are open to high school students, college students and adult participants and auditors.
