Lyra's 29th season begins with music from some of the eighteenth century's most celebrated characters. Our two prodigies–Johann Friedrich Reichardt and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart–showed remarkable ability from an early age, performing on and composing for numerous instruments. Meanwhile, in the Esterházy court, the beloved Joseph Haydn was known by many as "Papa Haydn." The program features the probable Minnesota premieres of Reichardt's settings of Petrarch sonnets, a dramatic "mad scene," Monolog des Tasso from Goethe's play about the ill-starred poet, some delicious Haydn songs in English, and the piece that inspired this program: Arianna a Naxos, a one-person operatic scene for soprano and fortepiano.
