Performers and/or Faculty:
  • Timothy Neill Johnson, tenor
  • Timothy Burris, theorbo

Theorbos were developed during the late sixteenth century, inspired by the demand for an extended bass range for use in accompanying opera and monodic song. A rich tradition of theorbo songs survives from England, France, and Italy, and all three traditions will be represented on this varied program, supplemented by theorbo solos by de Visée and Kapsberger.

Since its formation in 2000, Music's Quill has devoted itself to communicating lute-accompanied song in all its various forms. Last year, they released the final instalment of the first-ever complete recording of the Songs of Philip Rosseter, lutenist to King James I.
