Heinrich Ignaz Franz van Biber (1664-1704), the preeminent violin virtuoso of the 17th-century and Kapellmeister of Salzburgis beautiful baroquecathedral, left a body of extraordinary works for the violin, most notably his Mystery Sonatas (also called the Rosary Sonatas). These sonatas enjoy pride of place in solo instrumental repertoire, not only for their virtuosic and often pyrotechniccomposition but also because each sontata requires a re-tuning of the instrument, called scordatura, providing each of the sonatas its own distinctive character and sonority. In this concert, St. Lukeis resident baroque violinist Leah Nelson will continue her traversal of these sonatas, presenting the setrepresenting the iGlorious Mysteriesi of the Rosary. The program will include vocal concertos from the period performed by St. Lukeis Choir. Lecture at 7 PM.This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
