Anonymous 4's Susan Hellauer, Ruth Cunningham, Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek, and Marsha Genensky perform 13th-century motets built on pre-existing tenors that exemplified the musical avant garde of the era. the singers combine sacred motets devoted to Mary and secular motets that praise earthly ladies, Marion, Marot, Marotele, and their amorous sisters. Monophonic pieces upon which these motets are based include trouvère songs, chansons pieuses and plainchant masterpieces.
