Music of Allegri, Palestrina & AnerioBuilt between 1475 and 1483, during the reign of Pope Sixtus IV, the Sistine Chapel is famous above allfor its magnificent decorations, in particular the ceiling frescoes by Michelangelo. But just as magnificentwas the music composed for and sung by the Papal Choir. Gregorio Allegri (c.1582-1662) gained renown primarily from a single work - the Miserere, buthis outstanding talent as a composer is truly revealed in his powerful Missa Christus resurgens and the othermotets on this program. Along with the music of Allegri we will include masterpieces by G.P. da Palestrina (c. 1526-1594) and Felice Anerio (c.1560-1614), who preceded him as Papal composers. Lecture at 7 PM.This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
