As a young man, Weckmann studied and traveled with Schütz, quickly becoming exposed to Italian influences. Weckmann spent the majority of his career in Hamburg, a melting pot of nationalities and rich with superb musicians from Germany, Italy, and beyond. We have selected instrumental works by Italian composers who may have influenced Weckmann’s music during his study, such as Gabrieli, Castello, Frescobaldi, and Ferro; as well as pieces by influential German composers such as Hammerschmidt, Froberger, and Weckmann himself. This lush, virtuosic music beautifully represents the collaboratory atmosphere in place during Weckmann’s lifetime.
